Social media has been useful for social causes, but a new form of extreme transphobia has also arisen. It's a reaction to us being more visible and more families supporting their children the way I needed to be supported as a child. Fortunately, we are witnessing the birth of a generation that has what it takes to thrive.
Can you tell us about an organization that is doing important work right now?
Extinction Rebellion. They are the only people who understand the urgent and grave threat posed by climate change. I don't see LGBTQ people talking about this enough and they should: the science is clear that we are risking societal collapse in our lifetime. No one will respect your pronouns when they step on you for the last few boxes of food.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
When I arrived in London I met a DJ named Alex Silverfish who let me stay with her during a heat wave. She was so kind and full of life, but she was bullied every time she left the house. A few years later she committed suicide. I have many stories like this that could have been my own. The greatest success is being alive and growing up in the face of relentless hostility.
