Can you mention an LGBTQIA+ person or artwork that inspired you to live your own identity?
David Robilliard was a British poet and artist who died in 1988 of AIDS. His work is sincere, sad, dramatic and seductive. I am a passionate collector of his works: any book or drawing that appears on ebay I buy it as soon as I can. I have one which is a small matchbox with the words printed on it: "OLD FLAMES ARE DEAD MATCHES". I had it framed and now it's one of the few things I have on the walls of my apartment. Every day I stop to observe it to learn something new, beautiful and true.
Can you tell me about your personal style and how it has evolved since you gave free expression to your identity?
For some years now, the term bricolage workwear has summarized my style. Workwear is the basis and is supported by a touch of femininity and nostalgia. The curious thing is that, since I've transformed, I have a decidedly more masculine wardrobe. I've never enjoyed wearing men's clothing as much as I do now.
Is there an organization today that you feel is doing a particularly delicate and important job?
Black Trans Liberation, founded by Qween Jean, is building an active community in pursuing Black trans equality. The goal is to end trans homelessness by providing access and resources to community partners who are vocal and supportive of the TGNC community. Qween's grace and ability to energize so many people from different walks of life blows my mind.
