Read all Detail about Eye Protection and Tears
Tears are an important protective element of the eye. In addition, they allow us to express emotions - usually sadness and pain, although we often cry from happiness or emotion. However, if the eyes water uncontrollably, we start to worry. What can be the reasons for this and how to take care of our eyes every day?
Watery eyes. An important function for our eyesight
The tear film, commonly called tears, covers the surface of the eye, more specifically the conjunctiva and cornea. It performs a number of important functions, which we usually learn about when our eyes begin to feel its deficiency or excess.
Contrary to appearances, tears are not only made of water. If that were the case, they wouldn't stay on the surface of the eye.
The purpose of tears is:
- leveling out minor irregularities of the surface of the eye;
- washing out impurities and bacteria;
- moisturizing the eyeball;
- giving slip to the eyelids;
supplying oxygen to the cornea, which, unlike other eye structures, does not have its own blood vessels - thanks to which it is completely transparent.
The tear film is distributed over the eye by the blink reflex. Then, through the superior and inferior lacrimal points (in the area of the medial canthus), it enters the lacrimal ducts, and from there to the lacrimal sac and through the nasolacrimal duct to the nasal cavity. Our eyes are therefore directly connected to our nose - this is why when we cry we get a runny nose.
Tears are secreted in two ways. The first of them is the so-called basic (spontaneous) secretion, usually completely unnoticed by us. The second way is reflex secretion, most often caused by irritants.
